It is not all bad though, as Bellgardt also directs, bringing an assured style and high energy. There are several action sequences, all of which are thrilling and exciting. Excluding Tucker’s (approximately) teenage children who oppose the games, which a news interview with them stops the movie dead for a few minutes, the pace is relentless. Josh McKamie’s cinematography is sharp and juxtaposes the real world and artificial one nicely. It is the dinosaurs that take the cake, as, despite the limited resources, their CGI is quite good. Bellgardt and McKamie served as visual effects artists here as well, and their dedication to the material shines through. On occasion, a sabertooth tiger will look a bit jittery, but the details on the scales and teeth and claws of the velociraptors make up for such minor quibbles. More importantly, the prehistoric creatures are integrated into the locations perfectly, moving with weight and looking as real as the humans.

The Jurassic Games has a predictable storyline and an ending that does not work because of a gargantuan plothole. But the action is exciting, the acting is good, and the special effects are exquisite.

The Jurassic Games (2018) Directed by Ryan Bellgardt. Written by Ryan Bellgardt. Starring Ryan Merriman, Adam Hampton, Gary Frazier, Katie Burgess, Cate Jones, Dylan Cox, Rett Terrell, Luke Wyckoff.
