With that rant out of the way, Joe Haladin: The Case Of The Missing Sister is actually a very entertaining ride (those first 12 minutes notwithstanding). For starters, the plot concerning the twins and how/why they’re involved in this church and avoiding their aunt is very compelling. The writing makes Case perfectly reasonable, adding a sense of intrigue to what is actually happening. The balance between Joe’s personal life and his work is also excellent. Watching a mystery where the case doesn’t become all-consuming is refreshing.
Stelzig keeps the tension up well. When Colette meets Joe for the first time, there’s palpable intensity. An employee of the church’s cult compound bringing Abigail dinner is fraught with intrigue. Once the actual narrative gets underway, it is compelling.
“…some truly incredible acting by the stellar cast.”
More important is the cast. French is rightfully stoic as Joe, bringing the right amount of gravitas to the proceedings. Though he showcases his tender side with Martin, as the two share good chemistry. Becker is so fun and delightful that she lights up every scene she’s in. It is just too bad she’s not in more of them, as she is just that good. Springer is both charismatic and creepy as the malevolent (?) preacher.
But, the standout actor of Joe Haladin: The Case Of The Missing Sister is Reagan Kelly in her dual roles. As Colette, the actor’s body language suggests confidence that masks a temper. In the case of Abigail, Kelly plays her a bit more twitchy, faster-talking, and more desperate. Kelly shines as both twins and is clearly destined for a long and fantastic career in the cinematic arts should she continue to make films.
Look, no one could be blamed for shutting Joe Haladin: The Case Of The Missing Sister off before the 15-minute mark. It is just a mess, with plotholes, awkward characterizations, and confusing time jumps that suggest the entire film will be crummy. However, if viewers stick with it, they’ll be treated to an engaging mystery and believable family drama. More importantly, anyone watching will witness some truly incredible acting by the stellar cast.
