Ellie Church plays the titular Jessie, and she’s definitely the anchor of the film. She’s your gateway into the insanity that is soon to follow. She’s got a charm to her that reminds me of some old friends I used to hang out and play music with. She’s out of her depth and not nearly high enough to come to grips with the things that are happening to her and around her. Allison Maier’s Misty acts as a wise sage who’s supposed to guide Jessie through her psychedelic voyage, but everything she says is hilariously confusing. Most of Misty’s dialogue and advice are written so idiotically that it takes a swan dive off of the stupid ledge and lands a perfect score into the genius pool. Jett Bryant plays Rodger, a secondary character that does a lot of drugs and also spouts more utter nonsense. He’s pointless, everything he does is pointless, everything about this movie is pointless, but it’s all done in a crazy, fun, and colorful way that left me smiling. Also, the soundtrack is an exceptional mix of ska, punk, and psychobilly tunes that are definitely going into my collection. This is a gonzo trip down a smoke-filled rabbit hole.

“…this is a wonderful niche movie for stoners and weirdos”

Jessie’s Super Normal Regular Average Day gets a recommendation from me, but only for a select group of people. I think this is a wonderful niche movie for stoners and weirdos like myself, but I don’t think it’ll appeal to the more sensible crowd. I really think this would have benefitted from a bit more traditional story elements. Randomness is fine and all, but if I’m going to dedicate an hour plus of my time into watching a movie, I really wish it would have a little more to it. It doesn’t have to be intricate, but just something past the initial setup would have been greatly appreciated. Still, Jessie’s Super Normal Regular Average Day is a unique jewel in a sea of remakes, reboots, and monotonous repetition. It’s always great to experience something that’s unconventional. Jessie’s Super Normal Regular Average Day was a fun watch, and if you’re in the mood for a zany stoner comedy with lots of nudity and colorful set pieces, seek this one out and give it a go.
