As it stands, the animated movie is pretty good. However, some of the tropes being mocked do not always crossover the right way. For example, the inclusion of “sleazy” relationship radio programs seems odd, at best, just padding out the runtime, as it really just rehashes story beats the audience is already privy to. On the flip side, it allows Nimfa to express herself more organically than a voiceover, though it still feels a bit like padding.
With that being said, Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story gets a lot right. While at first, it might seem like this is a furry’s dream come true, the sharp writing presents well-drawn characters that are easy to root for. Nimfa’s frustrations with Roger are relatable and make sense. Thanks to the solid screenplay, their love for each other is felt. Equally as understandable is how hard she falls for Iñigo, as from the first frame he’s introduced, he is a suave, charming person. Plus, the plot has a few surprises up its sleeve, especially at the tenderhearted conclusion, which is shockingly sweet. It certainly helps that the voice acting is top-notch, as each actor perfectly encapsulates their role.
“Every scene is stunning and gorgeous.”
But the most essential aspect to the film’s success is the animation. Every scene is stunning and gorgeous. The character movements are smooth, and the backgrounds are fantastic to behold. The colors pop right off the screen, and Liongoren has a lot of fun with the medium, especially with a semi-superpowered rampage Roger goes on after finding out about Nimfa’s unfaithfulness. Beginning to end, Hayop Ka is a sight to behold, a true work of art in every frame.
Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story is a delightful little surprise. While not every joke totally works, and parts of the plot may only make sense if one is familiar with what it’s playing off, the characters are engaging and show a surprising amount of depth as the story progresses. The actors all do a great job, and the ending proves that the filmmakers have a huge heart and a big soft spot for their intended satirical target. But, what truly makes the independent production standout is the stellar animation which is truly stunning and gorgeous top to bottom.
Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story screened at the 2021 Fantasia Festival.
