Do Us Part is a rom-com that presents the worst nightmare of any wedding day. Here, filmmaker Reed Arnold poses the simple question: what if your first love shows up at your wedding and never fully got over you? I suppose it’s only a nightmare depending on which side of the aisle you’re standing on.
Ryan (Travis Laughlin) is getting married today, and so far, the ceremony preparations are going perfectly. The venue is set, the bride, Julia (Laura Elizabeth Delhauer), is ready, and next to Ryan is his best man, Mark (Reed Arnold), rushing to get into their tuxes. Ryan and Mark have been best friends since college, where Ryan was the good boy, and Mark was the playboy racking up a body count. But today, Mark has one job: get his best friend down the aisle.
But there is a third member of the college best-friend triangle, and it’s Rose (Kelly Russo). She shows up dressed beautifully, yet not on the guest list. Rose was Ryan’s ex in college, but that isn’t even accurate. The two were damn close before their career paths pulled them in opposite directions. When Rose hears Ryan and Julia are tying the knot, she decides she needs to tell Ryan her true feelings and sneaks into the wedding. Upon finding Ryan alone in the final hours before his wedding, Rose confesses that she’s loved him since the day they first met. Ryan is left reeling, as he has always felt the same way. Now he stands there weighing what might have been against the woman waiting for him in a wedding dress. Though this may sound like a simple premise, it gets so much more complicated by the end.

As far as rom-coms go, Do Us Part is much more of a romance than it is a comedy. The comedy part only means the tone stays light, with moments of comic relief as Mark plays the resident Lothario with sex on his mind pretty much every waking minute, while good boy Ryan gets put through the wringer the moment Rose walks in. But underneath the wedding-day antics, the film does exactly what a story like this needs to do. It explores the finality of the wedding day and casts doubt on the idea of one’s soulmate. Is it the first, or is it the one in the white dress at the altar? Then there are all the what-ifs and hypotheticals that swirl in our minds. As complicated as the situation is, these questions need to be answered, and the best part of this movie is that we’re not the ones who have to answer them; it’s the poor saps Reed Arnold has created for our sadistic pleasure.
What I appreciate most is Reed Arnold’s serious take on the subject. He doesn’t dodge any side of the question and forces his characters to answer and resolve each one. The film leans heavily on Ryan and Rose’s relationship, tracing it from college to today, but there’s a pivotal and poignant scene with Julia that sums it all up and ties a bow on it. The heart wants what the heart wants, I guess. At some point, logic and emotion crash into each other, and it’s only after that collision that the two start working together.
The performances by Kelly Russo, Travis Laughlin, and Reed Arnold work because they convey a genuine sense of friendship on screen. This friendship doesn’t put up with a lot of bullshit, but it’s one where they push each other into the right decisions and sometimes the selfish ones. Deep down, though, they each want what’s best for the other. In the end, Do Us Part asks a very serious question about marriage, love, and eternity. It digs into that question as deeply as it can, and then trusts itself to find the answers.
With Do Us Part, Reed Arnold turns a wedding-day nightmare into an honest look at the one we choose versus the one we almost chose. It’s a romance that keeps the laughs light but sends you home still chewing on its questions.
