I’ll start by saying I’m pretty agnostic about alien theories and conspiracies. We’ve certainly been reviewing a lot of documentaries on the subject matter over the last few months. Good stories are told, but for me, that’s what they are: stories with evidence that feels more anecdotal than scientific. While the other documentaries have been trying to make the case for extraterrestrial existence and our face-to-face encounters with them, Dark Alliance: The Next Generation clearly works to present all the information and then debunk it.

There is a lot of information and testimonials to absorb in this film. Weir and Lindsay, to their credit, allow each expert to speak and tell their story. Admittedly, though, sometimes they add a few sound effects and cute little emojis to take the steam out of what they’re saying. Weir lets their words and testimony do the work, giving you the subject on its own terms, and leaving it to you to decide what the truth behind these alien encounters might be.

“Ironically, the truth is still pretty vague at this point.”

With the impending release of alien and UFO classified information from the federal government, the timing of Dark Alliance: The Next Generation and the other UFO documentaries we reviewed couldn’t come at a better time. Like the previous documentaries, there’s a lot of information to absorb, a lot of new terminology, and a lot of events you’ve never heard about. Watching a documentary like this can feel overwhelming — that is, unless you’re truly interested in finding out the truth. Ironically, the truth is still pretty vague at this point.

To the film’s point, I tend to agree that some of these stories feel real but may have a more psychological origin. One also has to confront the economy of these alien conspiracies and the lecture circuit — and the fact that the facts are being muddled with sensationalistic stories that may or may not intentionally discredit the actual science.

I’m not here to tell you whether to believe or not. In the end, this documentary is another chapter in that overly complicated conversation. As I always say, don’t let other people tell you what to think. You do the research, look at both sides, and then come to your own conclusions. Dark Alliance: The Next Generation is a great place to start from the skeptic’s angle.
