Betty & Mary: The Actors Prepare, directed by America Young, middle-aged actress Betty (screenwriter Dana Lyn Baron) rehearses for a minor audition inside a theater bathroom, reading lines and putting on makeup. Her routine is broken when a younger Mary (Tally McCormack), also auditioning for the same role, drops by to offer her support. Tensions simmer as Betty can’t help but conclude the role will go to the younger Mary. Suddenly, Betty is stricken with severe abdominal pain and collapses, believing she is suffering a miscarriage, even though Mary points out she is far beyond childbearing age.
As Betty’s distress intensifies, Mary helps her through the pain. Her worst fear comes true as Betty begins bleeding, but the more Mary tries to help, the more Betty becomes indignant. Pressure comes to a head when others need the restroom and Betty’s name is being called.

“Middle-aged actress Betty rehearses for a minor audition inside a theater bathroom…”
Baron drew inspiration for Betty & Mary: The Actors Prepare from her fascination with complex, contradictory women. She imagines what might happen if characters like Lady Macbeth and Martha from Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? were merged into one. From that idea, Betty emerged as a woman wrestling with aging, relevance, and the absurdity of chasing validation in an industry obsessed with youth.
Through humor and discomfort, the film explores the tension between ambition and vulnerability, as well as the unspoken bond between women navigating insecurity and competition. Director America Young amplifies these themes by capturing the raw humanity beneath the polished surface, using the small, intimate space of an audition to expose the universal fear of being left behind.
Betty & Mary: The Actors Prepare succeeds in capturing a moment in time for Betty and Mary. Actors Baron and Tally McCormack bring a natural authenticity to their performances. Baron makes it impossible not to feel the inevitability of age with every look in the mirror. In the end, all we have is one another to get us to the next day.
