Hélène Hadjiyianni’s Anaïs is a documentary short that follows cross-country and marathon runner, Anaïs Quemener. Quemener has been running since she was 7 years old, and she inherited this passion from her father and grandfather. Her grandfather ran the Paris Marathon over 20 times, and he has a positive and spiritual outlook on the world. The documentary follows Quemener’s training for marathons in 2023. She works night shifts as a nurse, and by day, she consistently trains for various cross-country and marathon championships.
Beyond seeing her passion, we get to experience her hardships. Back in 2015, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Quemener endured various treatments and maintained vigorous activity due to her father’s support. By the end of her treatments in 2016, she was running in marathons and winning medals. To Quemener, running is her passion. She does it for her family, friends, running community, breast cancer survivors, and young girls. Beyond her optimism, Quemener is very humble even after beating multiple records.

Julien Gouilloux’s drone footage is excellent, with his mix of volcano shots and Quemener running in mountainous environments. Hadjiyianni’s inclusion of volcano footage visualizes Quemener’s dedicated passion and resilience as a runner.
