Full Disclosure: As admitted in other reviews, I am a Christian (see my review of The Miseducation of Cameron Post). At the same time, I refuse to use this forum to proselytize. That’s not my M.O. nor my job. I’ll say, I found Against The Tide: Finding God in an Age of Science utterly fascinating, and yes, I’m more prone to agree with its points than other readers, like you.
Like any documentary specifically designed to convince its audiences of his points, Sorbo and Lennox are confident in their beliefs and make every attempt to present them in a way that’s understandable, thorough, and persuasive. Agree or not, the conclusion is all up to you. As seen in The God Delusion debates, Lennox is not afraid to go up against the best opponents. My only real problem is that the doc plays a clip from Dawkins, for example, and then moves to Lennox and Sorbo responding to that point, and then moves on. I was left curious how Dawkins responded to Lennox afterward in the interest of fairness.
“…makes a good argument without issuing ‘Go straight to Hell’ cards…”
Against The Tide is what it is. It’s a lecture arguing God’s existence in the same way that An Inconvenient Truth argues climate change is a real threat. Both films have a point to make, attempt to respond to critics, and in the end, claim intellectual victory, thus forcing you to respond one way or the other.
Does God exist, and what role does Jesus Christ play? In the end, I would never tell you how to think nor force you to believe what I believe (that’s fascism). I’m in the camp where, in life, we take in as much information as we can about a subject, chew on it, and come up with our own opinions. To me, Against The Tide: Finding God in an Age of Science makes a good argument without issuing “Go straight to Hell” cards, thus leaving us something to chew on.
