In Adam’s Song, the writer, director, and star Nathan Xia takes us on a journey through the day (or two) of the life of Adam Song (Nathan Xia). He’s a musician trying to make a name for himself with his new EP released that night. He lives with pressure from his father as he performs in bars to closed ears and hands out CDs in the street, all in the hope of one day being able to reach an audience. Will he ever be able to live up to the expectations put on by himself or others?

For lack of better words, it takes real cojones for a young guy to take on arguably the three biggest roles in production, and Xia pulls off a hat trick. This should come as no surprise. The true Renaissance man never stops perfecting his craft. For the past six years, he’s pushed out one project after the next, with his newest venture being, Ayo, Check Up! that released this past October.

“…a musician trying to make a name for himself…”

When watching a short film on YouTube, it is easy for viewers to write them off. In this film, that is impossible. From the moment you’re pulled in by the deep red light, and each character appears on screen, you know exactly what you are in for. It is rare in 17 minutes to get such a personal feel for a film. For a viewer to be able to build such an affection or hatred for all that graces the screen. Not a moment is wasted, or detail looked past.

Recently we have seen directors use exaggerated cinematography to capture the raw emotions of stories we’re used to be being told fairly bare to the bones. And I don’t think I’m alone when I say, it works.

Adam’s Song is ripped from the heart of the current generation. It is an honest character study that touches on all the things one goes through while trying to make it in the art world. In less than 20 minutes, it will leave a lasting impression on all who get the pleasure of seeing it, making them remember the name Nathan Xia!
