That’s really cool. It looks excellent so I thought there must be some kind of trickery going on.
Hozie: Well, having it really happen is trickery. It’s kind of a pain in the a** because now the sound guy has twice as much work to do. He has to do sound in two rooms, you know? If anything goes wrong, you gotta stop and I definitely don’t want to make a movie like that again. I’d rather just focus on one thing happening.
They’re telling me I have time for one more question, so this is one for both of you. What are the advantages and pitfalls of shooting a film in New York City?
David: The thing about filming in New York is that there are like five blocks in lower Manhattan where you can get props, you can get cameras, you can buy stuff, you can rent stuff. You can make deals, you can get a car. It’s f**kin incredible how available everything is at a moment’s notice. But it’s also like any time you want to park a car, that’s impossible. You want to park two cars together, that’s impossible. You want to rent an apartment, that’s a billion dollars. It’s so available and so fast but everything’s so hard and expensive. Having made films in the U.K. as well, it’s like you have to know someone for four years before you can rent a camera off them? It drives you up a f**kin wall.
“…there are like five blocks in lower Manhattan where you can get props, you can get cameras, you can buy stuff, you can rent stuff.
Hozie: New York is great because there are so many great actors and so many great locations. It’s just the money thing. You could lodge a whole cast and crew at some other place somewhere else in the country and spend way less money. Things like Uber or taxis are gonna rack up real quick. You’re shooting ’til midnight and someone’s like, “Oh, you mind grabbing me an Uber home?” What are you gonna do, say no? Then suddenly, you look and you just dropped three grand on Ubers that month.
I just want y’all to know that is one of my favorite movies of…I always say last year because I saw it at Fantasia, but it will be of this year, too. It’s very, very good and I can’t wait for other people to see it. I hope that y’all keep working together and keep putting out cool stuff.
Hozie: I think we will!
