It looks like we may be getting the fifth Indiana Jones film in the summer of 2021. That’s the latest update, coming from long-time franchise star Harrison Ford. That’s good news, considering the fourth film had… we’ll call it a “mixed” reception. The next film has also been held up by a series of delays and staff shifts.
What’s Going On With Indiana Jones 5?
The next Indiana Jones film was set to be released July 19, 2019, but that’s not going to happen, obviously. So now, the film has been pushed back for release on July 8th, 2021.
That script was written by David Koepp – who is most notably known for summer blockbuster scripts like Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible. However, he could not continue working on the film due to work directing his own film.
In June of 2018, Jonathan Kasdan stepped in to work on his own version of the script. Jonathan Kasdan is the son of Lawrence Kasdan – the original Indiana Jones writer- and is known for acting in Californication as well as writing the script for Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The film is being helmed by original Raiders of the Lost Ark director Stephen Spielberg and “…should be starting to shoot sometime next year.”
The Influence of Indiana Jones
Ever since the franchise’s first release in 1981, Indiana Jones has been something of a cultural phenomenon. Its first two sequels, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade, were well-received and adored by fans. The latest Jones film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was not as well-enjoyed, but fans still love the series.
You can see Indiana Jones‘ influence in everything from modern adventure films to video games. Characters like Lara Croft and Nathan Drake from Uncharted are just modern Indiana Jones takes. Indiana Jones has even inspired online games, with the Book of Dead slot game clearly drawing from Indiana Jones‘ roots.
The popularity of console games such as Tomb Raider has led to multiple films over the years, with the latest starring Alicia Vikander in the main role, while there is an Uncharted film in the pipeline. Shaun Levy, the director of the new Uncharted film, hasn’t shied away from the Indiana Jones comparisons.
Levy discussed what he liked about the game with the Nerdist:
“…its action set pieces, its imaginative settings, and above all the kind of rogue swagger of Nathan. Those are things that I think make for a great movie.”
The Uncharted film will star Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and currently does not have a release date.
Nostalgia Train
Indiana Jones is one of many franchises getting reboots and sequels. Star Wars is obviously the biggest on the map, which is also a product of Lucasfilm. It’s always exciting seeing classic franchises getting revamped for a modern audience.
That doesn’t always mean the final product will be well-received, though. There is a fine balance that creators take in catering to fans and fulfilling their own artistic ambitions. But, the new film has a strong team, so we can only hope its better than the prior film. Indiana Jones fans will have to wait two more years to see if the movie stands up, though.
