Betting Odds for the Oscars

By Film Threat Staff | January 27, 2021

Hollywood’s biggest night won’t be the raging party that all of the stars are used to thanks to social distancing and COVID-19 protocols, but the yearly honors will still be handed out for the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday April 25, 2021.

It remains to be seen whether the 2021 Oscars are a virtual event or not. As we all know, it has been a watered-down year for movies to say the least. Filming takes place around the world and each city, state, and country has different COVID protocols and some places have seen a lot more of the virus than others. The date for the awards show was pushed back in hopes of achieving some of a normal night.

The entertainment world has been changing for a long time with the rise of streaming services and then the pandemic forced the closure of theaters, so production companies had to decide whether or not to wait until the traditional movie settings returned or to get their films out to audiences watching from home.

As we go forward, we’ll see a lot more original productions from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple TV, and the other services rank among the top contenders for Best Picture, Best Director, the Best Actor and Actress categories, and the technical awards for movie production.

With that in mind, we do see some of the streaming services represented in this year’s list of potential nominations. Contenders for Best Picture include The Trial of the Chicago 7, Da 5 Bloods, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom from Netflix and One Night in Miami and Sound of Metal from Amazon Studios.

Nominations for the awards won’t come out until March 15, 2021, but Oscars betting odds from ATS.io are already out there for the 93rd Academy Awards.

Betting on the Oscars was allowed in both New Jersey and Indiana for 2020. While we don’t have any odds as of yet, this is a sample of consensus betting odds from European sportsbooks. We should get US odds once the nominations are nailed down.

Nomadland is the consensus favorite, but with so much emphasis on social justice and the overall climate in the United States this year, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and One Night in Miami could be very popular picks as the Oscars draw closer.

Historical movies are generally viewed in a favorite light by The Academy and there are a ton of considerations for those this year. Keep that in mind as you look to bet on the Best Picture award, as feature films like Mank and News of the World also fit that definition.

Other awards will start to take shape as the nomination process is completed. For right now, there are so many movies in contention that it is hard to narrow down awards like Best Director. That being said, we can look at some early contenders.

Betting Odds for the Best Director Oscar

Chloe Zhao – Nomadland

+225

David Fincher – Mank

+265

Regina King – One Night in Miami

+315

Aaron Sorkin – The Trial of the Chicago 7

+450

Spike Lee – Da 5 Bloods

+575

No African American has won the award for Best Director, but six have been nominated. This year, it would appear that there are at least two nominated in Regina King for One Night in Miami and Spike Lee should get his second nomination for Da 5 Bloods. He was previously nominated for BlacKKKlansman in 2018.

David Fincher’s Mank could be a really popular selection this year at the awards show. Fincher was previously nominated twice for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Social Network, which was written by likely Best Director nominee Aaron Sorkin for The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Nomadland has been the movie with most buzz and Chloe Zhao could be only the second woman ever to win the award. Kathryn Bigelow won in 2009 for The Hurt Locker.

A long list of awards will be handed out on April 25 with betting odds markets available for most of them. Those will include:

– Best Lead Actor

– Best Lead Actress

– Best Supporting Actor

– Best Supporting Actress

– Best Original Screenplay

– Best Adapted Screenplay

– Best Documentary Feature

– Best Animated Feature

– Best Film Editing

– Best Original Score

– Best Cinematography

It will be an untraditional year for The Oscars, but the same awards as always are going to be handed out and that should mean a lot of betting value in a unique year for film.
