Enter a much darker wonderland than you could imagine in the outstanding neo-noir Misdirection, written by Lacy McClory and directed by Kevin Lewis. Sara (Olga Kurylenko) and her partner, Jason (Oliver Trevena), have hacked into the security system of the luxurious home of high-profile defense attorney David Blume (Frank Grillo). They both watch him get ready to leave for the evening, watching what codes he is entering in and making note of the safe in the bedroom.
As they prepare to leave, Sara and Jason once again confirm with each other that this job is their final one. After this big score, they are getting out from under the shadow of criminal acts forever. Blume speaks at a big charity event about his past struggles with drug addiction, concluding with a huge donation to help save others from slavery to the needle.
“Sara and her partner, Jason, have hacked into the security system of the luxurious home of high-profile defense attorney David Blume.”
Meanwhile, Sara and Jason enter the house, using the methods they have perfected from years of experience robbing others. While emptying the safe, Blume arrives home way earlier than he was supposed to. Sara and Jason get the jumped on the man and tie him up. But now, they are faced with a big problem. Will the duo leave now and spend the rest of their lives on the run, or will they murder the one witness who can place them at the scene? Jason doesn’t have the belly for killing, but Sara seems to think their only way out is on a carpet of cold blood. Trust a horror director to deliver one of the darkest neo-noirs yet.
Lewis appeared in the cult film Willy’s Wonderland, and his horror pedigree shows in how dark the big reveal in Misdirection is. His brilliant execution of the stomach-dropping moment is one of the most bloodcurdling scenes I have ever seen (and I go out of my way for this stuff). If thrillers are designed to act like carnival rides, then this is a cinematic ferris wheel that breaks loose and tears down the highway.
