If you’re like me, when it comes to ordering takeout, I’m a creature of habit. It’s the same thing every time, and the restaurant always knows what “the usual” is. In Peter Clancy’s ultra-brief short film, Beef Fried Rice, there are consequences to trying something different.
Our tale opens with Mr. Clancy (Peter Clancy) ordering from Mr. Chang (Matthew Zimmers) of Chang’s Garden. Suspicions arise when Mr. Clancy decides to change his usual chicken fried rice to beef fried rice. Confused, Mr. Chang delivers Clancy’s takeout order directly to him. But is it a matter of trying something new, or is Chang’s suspicion warranted?
“Suspicions arise when Mr. Clancy decides to change his usual chicken fried rice to beef fried rice”
Not to spoil anything, but the film would be boring if the Clancys had wanted to change things up.. Beef Fried Rice turns into an action-packed comedy. Yes, the short is ultra-low budget, which accounts for the cheap production values, including gunfire sound effects, but not a single drop of blood spilled. But who needs a big Hollywood production as filmmaker Peter Clancy builds an exciting action tale using only a pair of chopsticks and a pack of soy sauce.
At three and a half minutes, you’re in for some hearty laughs ending with a fortune cookie that favors the unfortunate. But whatever you do, just order the usual and stay away from the Beef Fried Rice.
