The 23rd Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF), October 13-20, 2022, celebrates independent and international film for every interest. It’s where film enthusiasts and festival attendees can enjoy the best of Newport Beach, California’s culinary and beverage connoisseurs, at public and private parties while enjoying some of the best independent films available on-screen and in-person from stateside and abroad for 2022.
The range of film and film subjects, including action sports, art, architecture, design, food, environment, family, music, and LGBTQ+ in short, documentary, and narrative formats, are carefully curated to include an international selection of subjects and stories. Filmmakers are often in attendance with their work and encourage interaction with filmgoers. As a celebrated and anticipated coastal Orange County, California, fall event, NBFF takes the film festival experience to another level and offers a film and event for everyone’s discerning tastes, from architecture and surfing to culinary cuisine and courageous independent films often only available at a festival like NBFF.
The 2022 NBFF will screen more than 300 standout films from over 50 different countries, and this year, the festival is overflowing with international programming and many rising stars. NBFF opens with the biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and will close with the second of the Knives Out series, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
Opening the 2022 NBFF, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story stars Daniel Radcliffe as “Weird” Al Yankovic in the unexaggerated true story about the most outstanding musician of our time. From a conventional upbringing where playing the accordion was a sin, Al rebelled and made his dream of changing the words to world-renowned songs come true. An instant success and sex symbol, who doesn’t love an outsider? Al lives an excessive lifestyle and pursues an infamous romance that nearly destroys him. The film, directed by Eric Appel, also stars Evan Rachel Wood, Julianne Nicholson, ‘Weird Al Yankovic, Rainn Wilson, Quinta Brunson, Spencer Treat Clark, Will Forte, and Toby Huss.

Corsage
In NBFF’s Centerpiece Series, a collection of international films with celebrated and award-winning actors and actresses, including Corsage, a fictional account of the later years of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, Sisi (Vicky Krieps), once idolized for her beauty and renowned for inspiring fashion trends. ‘Sisi’ celebrates her 40th birthday on Christmas Eve in 1877 and must fight to maintain her public image, even if it means taking drastic measures. While Elizabeth’s role has been reduced against her wishes to be purely performative, her hunger for knowledge and zest for life makes her restless. Directed by Marie Kreutzer and starring Vicky Krieps, Florian Teichtmeister, Katharina Lorenz, and Colin Morgan, Corsage is a period piece that reflects a great many 21st-century issues.

Dear Zoe
NBFF’s features include several independent films that will catch the attention of many. Dear Zoe, a dramatic movie, tells the story of when Tess (Sadie Sink) and her family suffer an unimaginable loss. Tess finds support from a surprising source—her biological father, a lovable slacker from the wrong side of the tracks, and the charming but dangerous juvenile delinquent next door. A Q&A will take place after the screening with the cast and crew. Directed by Gren Wells, Dear Zoe features Sadie Sink, Theo Rossi, Kweku Collins, Vivien Lyra Blair, Justin Bartha, and Jessica Capshaw.

Love & Mathematics
Spotlight films at the 2022 NBFFs include a film from Mexico, Love & Mathematics. After his time in the popular boy band Equinoccio, Billy Lozano is living a tedious life as a married man, in his late thirties, in the suburbs. Frustrated with his lifestyle, he lives with all the necessary pseudo-comforts in the house of his dreams but feels like the biggest loser since his last entrepreneurship failed once again. He has no other occupation but to take care of his son and wife’s dog. One day he meets Monica, an ex-fan of the music group, who moves into the house in front of them, and encourages him to resume his artistic career. Their lives will never be the same, or will they? Directed by Claudia Sainte-Luce, Love & Mathematics stars Diana Bovio, Roberto Quijano, Homero Guerra, and Jessica Mendiolea.

Who Are the Marcuses?
Featured in NBFF’s environmental film section is Who Are the Marcuses? a documentary film reflecting today’s need for philanthropy to change the world. Directed by Matthew Mishory, Who Are the Marcuses? tells the story of Howard and Lottie Marcus, a Jewish couple from Long Island who were also savvy investors, and re-imagines conflict resolution in the Middle East and peace through the Earth’s most precious resource: water. Mishory interviews several Israeli dignitaries along with Warren Buffet. Mishory will attend the screening and a Q&A after the film. Directed by Matthew Mishory, Who Are the Marcuses? includes Yitzhak Herzog, Warren Buffett, E. Randol Schoenberg, Ellen Marcus, Daniel Chamovitz, Nadav Boms, Daniel Gordis, Seth Siegel, Micah Goodman, and Kevin Ehrhart.

Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter
Featured in NBFF’s culinary films is Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter. In the 2000s, Chef Charlie Trotter was the toast of Chicago, his eponymous restaurant one of the world’s top fine-dining destinations. A culinary bad-boy, Trotter paved the way for the likes of Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay, yet his tempestuous, competitive nature alienated many. This absorbing, unvarnished profile chronicles the passions of a master chef and the consequences of pursuing perfection at all costs. Directed by Rebecca Halpern, Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter features Grant Achatz, Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse, and Carrie Nahabedian.

Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues
In NBFF’s music section, 2022 features the documentary Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues. An intimate and revealing look at the world-changing musician presented through a lens of archival footage and never-before-heard home recordings and personal conversations. This definitive documentary honors Armstrong’s legacy as a founding father of jazz, one of the first internationally known and beloved stars, and a cultural ambassador of the United States. Directed by Sacha Jenkins, Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues features Louis Armstrong, Nas, and Wynton Marsalis, with music composed by Terence Blanchard.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
The closing film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, continues the escapades of famed Southern detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), who travels to Greece for his latest case—directed by Rian Johnson, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery stars Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, and Kathryn Hahn.
