Nine short films produced by students from eight film schools under The Kodak 35 mm Project will screen at
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (5905 Wilshire Blvd.) beginning at 7 p.m. on September 23. The screening is the culmination of an endeavor launched three years ago by Kodak with the goal of giving student filmmakers an opportunity to shoot in the 35 mm format.
“Our objective was to give student filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their talent using state-of-the-art technology that is available to professional moviemakers,” says Kodak’s Lorette Bayle, who initiated the program. “Kodak provided 35 mm film, and other companies offered cameras, lighting and other equipment, as well as lab and postproduction services.”
Schools participating in the project included Brooks Institute, California Institute of the Arts, California State University-Long Beach, California State University-Northridge, Chapman University, Loyola Marymount University, San Diego State University and University of
California-Los Angeles. The faculties at these schools selected the projects based on student scripts, or developed the short stories in the classroom specifically for the Kodak program. The student crews were made up from
film classes.
The resulting short films are:
THE LAST MARCH (Chapman) – A young confederate soldier entangled in the gruesome Civil War attempts to redeem his past actions, and is faced with choosing to be faithful to his father’s beliefs or his own.
EL VIAJE (THE JOURNEY) (CalArts) – While preparing a grand celebration for her daughter’s birthday, Rita is forced to come to terms with her past choices.
GRIM LOVE (Loyola Marymount) – Tired with his job, the Grim Reaper is looking for a new career.
HEARTS AS ONE (Chapman) – The enduring power of love is the catalyst behind the bittersweet romance of George, a man in his 70’s, and Mary, a retirement home resident.
RECALLING TED (CSUN) – When a Hollywood agent gets a visit from the Angel Michael, he must make the deal of a lifetime to be saved from an eternity in hell.
HELP WANTED (Brooks) – Nathan Larson is near the end of his rope, but with a little help from his employment agent, he finds himself struggling between his compulsion to steal and desire to be an upstanding citizen.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS (SDSU) – Change brings redemption for a man who made the wrong choice.
FELLINI’S DONUT (CSULB) – One man’s struggle to find perfection in a donut.
STILL LIFE (UCLA) – A young woman’s chance meeting with a friend of her father results in an unexpected moment of shared humility.
