At this year’s Marco island Film Festival, held October 18-27, educational programs designed to foster careers in the independent filmmaking industry targeting students worldwide and of all age levels will be available along with the regular schedule of films.
Student Workshop ^ Open to high school-age students, the workshop is designed to introduce novice filmmakers to the major components of the filmmaking process. The intensive five-day program features all facets of creating a film including Directing, Editing, Screenwriting, Acting, Producing, Music, Sound and Sound Effects. Students have a “hands on” opportunity to work directly with visiting filmmakers. All participants are guided and mentored in the creation of a personal short film. Participants analyze treatment development, script construction, basic direction and post-production.
The Marco Island Film Festival’s Student Workshop runs throughout the festival week. Enrollment is limited to 20 students on a first-come, first-served basis.
KidFest ^ Taking place on Tuesday, October
22nd, “KidFest”is designed for middle school and high school students. The foundation of cinema rests in the content of the production as well as the techniques used to communicate the story to the viewer. Selecting films that appeal to each age group, the Marco Island Film Festival offers a cultural experience and a first-hand learning opportunity through guided tours of the projection booth and a discussion with the filmmaker following the film screening. Students from participating Collier County Schools will have an opportunity to take advantage of this educational and fun program. Contact your school for more information.
Student Film Competition ^ This program is all about storytelling. The festival solicits films worldwide from students of all ages. The films are reviewed and judged by criteria established by film industry professionals, but the focus is on writing and being able to communicate concepts and ideas through the medium of film.
The festival showcases the top entries in each category – SCREENPLAYS, ANIMATION, FEATURE FILMS, SHORT FILMS, and DOCUMENTARIES—during the festival and cash awards are presented to the winners. A result of the 2001 workshop, the festival will feature our first student film entry from Collier County this year.
International Interns ^ The Marco Island Film Festival provides housing and on-the-job training in event planning, advertising, public relations, and festival operations. Applicants are selected on an individual basis based on skills, interests and relevant work experience or area of study. The festival receives hundreds of applications per year from all over the globe. In the past five years, students have been chosen to participate in the festival from The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, along with many from within the United States.
All Marco Island Film Festival programs are designed for multi-generational audiences and many events are free and open to the public.
Independent films will be shown at theaters in Naples and on Marco Island from noon until midnight. Off-screen, festival-goers can examine movie making through a comprehensive series of lectures, workshops and seminars with film directors, screenwriters, actors, film distributors and film industry experts. Evenings during the festival will be filled with special celebrity events geared toward film enthusiasts.
