The Eighth New York African Film Festival will get going in April with a program that splits the bill between two screening locales. The first leg of the Festival runs from April 5th to April 11th at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theatre, and the second installment will finish up on April 13th and 14th at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
This year’s Festival showcases 22 films, including 8 U.S. and New York premieres. The event’s focus is global-scale communication between African cultures and the rest of the world:
“Increasingly, Africa finds itself caught between the demands of global capitalism and the sway of local traditions. African filmmakers are a crucial part of this cultural dialogue, attempting to portray the tensions generated by the evolution of new cities, new migrations, and new selves in work that ranges from pro-independence political dramas to postcolonial urban comedies.”
Highlighted programs include “Spotlight on Southern Africa,” which features films from Zimbabwe and South Africa, and the “African is…” program — a group of contemporary films by second-generation African immigrants, particularly those in Britain and France.
