Interviewing people (especially those society labeled as “freaks” because of their sexual preference or desire to buck the status quo) as to why they moved to New York City is an interesting idea. It’s hard to examine it in only six minutes, though, which is why “YNYC” ultimately fails. If people were given more time to discuss their hardships, dreams and misconceptions and how the city that never bathes fits into all of that, then this would be a great film.
Director Scott Peehl is onto something here, but he needs to flesh it out. He needs to ask the people about their past, interview some homeless people, or follow that one drag queen around for a few days. This, however, is just a tease.
