The Pretty/Scary Film Festival, owned by www.Pretty-Scary.net, is only open to horror films directed, produced, or written by women. This year’s selections are the best of what we’ve seen in the world of female horror filmmaking in 2006.
First Place Short Film Winner: Replacing Delphine directed by Kasia Kowalcyk.
Replacing Delphine is a haunting black and white dark fairytale about love, loss, and taxidermy. It’s reminiscent of some of the darker work of Maya Deren and Cocteau, with just a little bit of Ingmar Bergman thrown in. www.tal-kasia.com
First Place Feature Film Winner: The Secret Life of Sarah Sheldon directed by Annette Ashlie.
Annette Ashlie’s twisted sociopathic title character, Sarah Sheldon, is an ex-medical student obsessed with sterilizing promiscuous people and ending overpopulation, is one of the most original takes on the “mad scientist” theme in horror history. Mixing surgery, sex, and mutilation, it stretched concepts of gender and love to their extremes. www.slossthemovie.com
Official Selections
Heading Home directed by Jane Rose is a very H.P. Lovecraft inspired short film. Keeping with the feelof traditional Lovecraft adaptations like Reanimator she puts her own lively spin on the concept of Reanimation.
Movie Monster Insurance directed by Paula Haifley poses the question: What would YOU do if you were caught without Monster Insurance? Haifley shows us what havoc classic Universal monsters can wreak when you and your family are unprepared. This short is a hilarious poke at the ridiculousness of modern inurance companies and society’s fear of being attacked unawares.
Honorable Mentions
Raven gets a Life is veteran Devi Snively’s third short horror-themed film in as many years. Always sweet, but deadly, her intriguing style comes through again in the story of Raven, a depressed young girl who finds happiness by consulting bums, drug addicts, Dracula, and the Grim Reaper himself. Snivley was last year’s Pretty/Scary First Place Short Film Winner with Teenage Bikini Vampire.

Carthage is director Darla Enlow’s latest and most sophisticated horror film. With an extremely frightening slasher chasing after a couple in an abandoned town, the knives are sharp and the deaths are filled with terror.

Michelle Fatale’s directorial debut Dead Line at first seems like a traditional slasher film. But like recent female-driven horror like High Tension, Dead Line has a severe twist that is even darker than any of the murders that take place.
