The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival is seeking lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (glbtq) youth between the ages of 13 and 19 for its 2003 Gay Youth Media Project. The purpose of the GYM Project is to provide instruction in film/video production, teach media literacy and critical thinking, and give an introduction to queer films and film festivals. Participants will also be given the opportunity to explore and discuss queer issues, culture, and history. The GYM Project is offered to youth at no cost to them or their families.
This will be the third year for The GYM Project, which was successfully piloted in the spring of 2001. The GYM Project is a series of hand-on film and video production courses taught by professors, graduate students and local film industry professionals. In addition, leaders from the queer community as well as representatives from local glbtq organizations attend portions of each class to engage the students in conversation on glbtq topics. Ultimately, the participants write, direct, and produce a short video project. The final product will be showcased at the 2003 Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in August, as well as submitted to other film festivals around the country and will be offered as an educational tool to be used in the classroom or by other queer & queer friendly organizations.
The 2003 GYM Project is currently taking applications for new students. The application deadline is MAY 31st, 2003.
