Vikram Yashpal’s “Trade-Offs” will screen at the San Diego Asian Film Festival in October.
“Trade Offs” is about challenging traditions. It deals dramatically with ethnic identity: a woman defies the burdensome expectations to be a traditionally feminine and compliant Indian wife. She often questions the “right” of men to make choices on her behalf and discovers a sense of individuality after coming to the US. For the male protagonist, it challenges the age-old values of “working hard without an ulterior motive of gaining wealth”.
In the movie, rules are broken, boundaries between right and wrong are blurred, and choices are made that leave a lasting impression on the relationship between the newly weds.
