THE AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE ROLLS OUT THE 70MM FILMS

By Film Threat Staff | February 4, 2005

The American Cinematheque presents the 5th Annual 70 MM
Film Festival, (January 21 – February 6) at the Aero and Egyptian Theatres. From Super Technirama 70 to Ultra Panavision to Dimension 150 and more, the 70 mm large-screen format promised – and delivered – a Barnum-esque world of spectacular sights and 6-track sounds. If the movies were always larger-than-life, then 70mm movies were MUCH much larger!
Screenings are at the Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the historic 1922 Egyptian (6712 Hollywood Boulevard between Highland and Las Palmas) in Hollywood and the Max Palevsky Theatre at the Aero, at 1328 Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. Some films will screen at both venues and some exclusively at the Aero, or the Egyptian.
Highlights include gorgeous new restorations from 20th Century Fox, of two films long-unseen in 70mm: director Carol (THE THIRD MAN) Reed’s epic THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY, starring Charlton Heston as master artist
Michelangelo; and director Richard Fleischer’s delightful musical DOCTOR DOLITTLE, starring Rex Harrison in one of his most famous roles. Returning from last year’s festival is Jacques Tati’s masterpiece PLAYTIME, plus encore screenings of other all-time 70 mm. classics, PATTON,
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.
