Don’t be fooled by the title OF “Sick Sex” – there’s nothing kinky going on here. Instead, there’s a bitter, nasty short about a man who insists on having sex with his girlfriend when she is ill in bed with a 102 degree fever. He tries to cajole her into passion while she keeps turning down his advances. It ends up in a shrill exchange of insults.
The only surprise from “Sick Sex” is how the film takes a terribly wrong turn. What could’ve been an offbeat comedy about a h***y man’s pursuit of unlikely bliss quickly deteriorates into a tinny volley of name calling. Filmmaker Justin Nowell intensifies the battle by keeping the couple in tight close-ups, but that backfires as their obnoxious behavior intensifies and they become too close for viewer comfort.
The immaturity of the film’s concept and executiion ultimately produces no redeeming features. Indeed, the flick gives sex a bad rap.
