RARE SAMMY DAVIS JR. FILM SCREENS

By Film Threat Staff | July 12, 2001

The first New York screening in nearly four decades of the 1963 film version of the Bertolt Brecht-Kurt Weill masterpiece “The Threepenny Opera” takes place on Monday, July 16, at the Two Boots Den of Cin, 44 Avenue A @ East 3rd Street. The screening, hosted by Film Threat’s Phil Hall, takes place at 8pm and the $5.00 admission includes a complimentary beverage (beer, wine or soda).
“The Threepenny Opera” stars Sammy Davis Jr. as the Street Singer, who introduces the plotline with the classic song “Mack the Knife.” The presence of Sammy Davis Jr. was a groundbreaking achievement in non-traditional casting, as the role was not conceived for nor previously cast with an African-American performer in mind. Curt Jurgens co-stars as the villainous Macheath and Gert Frobe (best known for his titular role in “Goldfinger”) plays his adversary Mr. Peachum.
“The Threepenny Opera” has not been available for either revival screenings or television broadcast since its initial release and the film has not been for sale on video since the early 1980s. The upcoming screening of “The Threepenny Opera” provides a very rare chance to enjoy this elusive motion picture.
