The Smith family is about to have the worst Thanksgiving ever in Bloody Hammer Films’ short film No Thanks. Expecting just another year of family time around a Thanksgiving feast, the meal is interrupted by the arrival of a two Native Americans and their red jacket-wearing friend, who would like to join in. Father Smith obliges, and the table is set for mayhem.
And mayhem is precisely what is delivered as this over-the-top gorefest kicks off the bloodletting and screaming. Rock music, mood lighting, some smoke and a whole lot of practical effects-work deliver an epic meal of blood and guts. If there’s anything that elevates this tale above simply mean-spirited carnage, it’s the realization of a revenge fantasy of Native Americans on a white family that just doesn’t get it. So, yeah, maybe there’s some social commentary here.
No Thanks was an entrant in the 2012 Boston 48 Hour Film Festival, and I can only imagine the shock that must’ve happened when it screened. This is not for the faint of heart, or for those who can’t stand the sight of fake blood and raw meat. Its violence is insane and outrageous, but it is also to be appreciated from a filmmaking standpoint. It’s not CGI, and it contains all the visceral thrills and chills that comes along with a horrific practical effect done gruesomely right. This short is definitely not for everyone, but those who dig their gore, guts and gravy may find it fun.
