Due to the success of its 1st annual event last June, the New York-Tokyo Film Festival is expanding into a Monthly Director Series. Every 2nd Sunday evening, MDS offers audiences the opportunity to screen various acclaimed Japanese films, and also provides an open forum for discussion with the night’s guest speaker. With a catalog of Japanese films seldom screened in New York, MDS promises a year’s worth of cinematic cultural conversion.
New York-Tokyo’s Monthly Director Series debuts November 9th @ 5pm, and will continue every 2nd Sunday of the month at the New York Film Academy. Each month they will showcase a different Japanese directorial talent from the likes of Takeshi Kitano (“Zatoichi,” “Brother”), Takashi Miike (“Agitator,” “Graveyard of Honor”) , Mamoru Oshii (“Avalon,” “Ghost in the Shell”) and others.
MDS kicks off the first month with director Shinya Tsukamoto, best known for his groundbreaking 1988 feature film debut, “Tetsuo: The Iron Man” . November’s screening will include two of his later works, “Tetsuo II” and “Tokyo Fist.”
