The films of Leos Carax are described as “ecstatic and impassioned in a way only French movies can be, elusive and fragmented in a way only a post-modern, post-New Wave filmmaker’s can be.” The enigmatic Carax, whose name is an anagram for Alex Oscar — a play on his Academy Awards dreams as a child, crafts cool, seductive films that explore the role of love in a modern society. His most noteworthy works include the recent “The Lovers on the Bridge,” as well as “Bad Blood” and “Pola X”.
The American Cinematheque, in conjunction with the Egyptian Theatre, will bring Carax’ finest movies to light on the big screen for his first major Los Angeles retrospective. From [ September 30th to October 1st, 2000, ] the above films, as well as “Boy Meets Girl,” will be shown, and Carax will also be in attendance to discuss his approach and to answer questions.
