The Two Boots Den of Cin, a visual and performing arts venue, invites movie lovers to its new Wednesday weekly retro film series “Star Theater.” Hosted by Film Threat’s Phil Hall, all screenings are held every Wednesday at 7 pm and admission is $5.00. The Den of Cin is located downstairs inside Two Boots Video at 44 Avenue A at East 3rd Street (tel. 212-254-0800).
Every Wednesday at 7pm, The Den of Cin turns its spotlight on a celebrated icon of the big screen and presents a month-long tribute of this legend’s enduring (and sometimes elusive) work. For the premiere month, Star Theater pays tribute to the genius of Orson Welles with four classic films directed by and starring the master artist.
January 9 – “The Immortal Story” (1968, directed by Orson Welles, 60 minutes). A rare screening of the first color film directed by Welles, who plays a dying merchant in 19th century Macao with a bizarre plan to hire two young people to produce an heir for him. Of course, things do not go according to plan. Jeanne Moreau and Fernando Rey co-star.
January 16 – “Othello” (1951, directed by Orson Welles, 93 minutes). The Cannes-honored classic, with Welles as the tormented Moor driven to the outer edges of jealousy and murder.
January 23 – “Chimes at Midnight” (1966, directed by Orson Welles, 115 minutes). Welles compressed five Shakespeare plays into a single film celebrating the antics and downfall of Sir John Falstaff. Jeanne Moreau and John Gielgud co-star.
January 30 – “Mr. Arkadin” (1956, directed by Orson Welles, 93 minutes). Orson Welles plays a mysterious magnate who feigns amnesia and commissions an American smuggler to create a confidential report on his supposedly forgotten early years. Welles’ wife Paola Mori plays his daughter, while Akim Tamiroff, Michael Redgrave, Katina Paxinou and Mischa Auer pop up in hilarious supporting roles.
