Went to Fantasia Festival opening night yesterday. Was awesome as always. Watched two great films, the French Canadian “Truffe” and Takashi Miike’s “Sukiyaki Western Django“. Was surprised at how good Django turned out to be. I figured I’d like it, but only in a so-so “I enjoyed myself but I’m never gonna buy this.” way. Instead, I think this is Miike’s best and most crowd pleasing movie since One Missed Call. It shares the latter’s ability to use cliche in a new and novel way while being a proper western in it’s own right. I’ll have a review up soon.
Met up with Mariko McDonald and chatted a bit about movies and junk. We laughed when we got onto the topic of a movie called “Infection” and realized that we’d both (totally independently from each other) watched it while totally shitfaced, which is the only way to get through that piece of garbage. Also met Dahlia from Fantastikasia. She told me that they’re remaking “My Bloody Valentine” of all things, in f*****g 3D! I checked out it’s page on IMDb, and it doesn’t look good kids. I’m not gonna formulate an opinion before I watch it, but they turned it into another “Man comes back to his hometown after being gone and discovers…” bunch of bullshit. Hopefully it’ll be better than that but one of the co-writers also did Jason X. So maybe I’ll skip it.
Didn’t go to the festival tonight, have some family business tomorrow, but I will return Saturday night to watch “Mother of Tears”. I grew up with Argento films and I’ll be damned if I miss it. To get myself ready I’m watching the second part of the Three Mother triology: “Inferno“. It’s not half as good as the first part “Suspiria” but it’s the one where the mythology of the Mothers was explained. (The first one was more of a standalone thing.) Will be interesting to see how well “Mother of Tears” fits with the other two films. Stylistically speaking Suspiria and Inferno are quite close, any deviation from that would stand out like a bright red dick on a birthday cake. I’ll keep you posted!
Thanks, Nathan. That’s so sweet. Please let me know what you think of the new column!
Hooray for Mariko McDonald! I loved reading her Enter the Den of Sin columns.
