I’ll give writer/producer/director/star Julian Lara credit for doing a zombie movie on a dental floss budget. I just wish it would’ve been more original and scary, though the special effects were passable.
The story here is as simple as it gets. Four friends go camping. They tease each other. Zombies rise from the forest floor. They attack the campers. You can kind of guess the rest from there.
There are some genuinely creepy moments (a female zombie with long hair walking just within the shadows of the trees), and some truly groan inducing scenes (that same zombie hamming it up for the camera) in this short
flick. The subtitle translations — the film appears to be Italian — leave a lot to be desired, too, though that probably isn’t Lara’s fault. In other words: “Evil Night” has some heart despite its flaws. Unfortunately, a predictable movie isn’t scary no matter how much blood you throw at the camera.
I don’t know if this is Lara’s first attempt at making a movie. If it is, he shows some promise. If it isn’t, he still has a lot to learn.
