ELMO IN GROUCHLAND

By Chris Gore | September 27, 1999

Elmo is past my time since I grew up watching Sesame Street in the 70s before all these new characters. The story has to do with Elmo’s lost blanket, the search is not as compelling as, say, the quest for the technical readouts of the Death Star, but dramatic enough for 4 year-olds. I would like to set the record straight and say that the blue muppet Grover is actually the voice of Yoda in Star Wars. Absolute fact!
This movie is great for kids, true, but I was really hoping to get a closer look at the characters. After all, this is a movie and my expectations were high. Sure, Sesame Street has always answered the easy questions — the correct order of letters, what is 2 + 2 — but what about life’s more important mysteries? What’s it like to be made of felt? Is it easy being green? What’s the deal with Bob? Why is Oscar the Grouch so grouchy? (I think I can answer that one! You would be grouchy too if you had someone’s fist up your a*s controlling your every move!) Otherwise, good fun for the single digit aged set!
