You know what the absolute best thing about writing for Film Threat is? It’s seeing films like this that I may not have otherwise. Films like Dan Poole’s “The Green Goblin’s Last Stand” and this film “D.I.Y.” that inspires artists to get out there and express themselves because just like one of the artists in this film says – “If no one ever knows who you are, at least you know who you are.”
“D.I.Y. or Die” is composed of interviews with an impressive collection of do-it-yourself artists such as Richard Kern, Ian MacKaye, Lydia Lunch, Ron Asheton, J.G. Thirlwell and many more astounding people who are telling it like it is – get your art done for yourself first or die!
Forget about going to art school, this film is all you aspiring artists need to get your a*s in gear as “D.I.Y.” isn’t shy about rubbing your nose against the chalkboard and telling you what’s what and one of those lessons is that there is no such thing as an aspiring artist. If you want to do something, just do it.
In capturing such great footage from his subjects and piecing that footage together in a way that flows quickly and smoothly so that no one is ever caught droning on with old war stories from the street, director Michael W. Dean has placed himself right up there alongside these renowned artists. One of the best films I’ve seen all year. Go out of your way to check it out!
