The DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books has set the kickoff date for its 2004 series spotlighting top works from its DIY Film Festival and DIY Music Festival.
On Thursday, April 1, CLUB DIY will present an evening of live music, film screenings and discussions on film/TV music and radio syndication at the Derby nightclub in Hollywood, located at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd., corner of Hillhurst.
Admission to CLUB DIY is free to past festival and convention attendees if they RSVP to bruce@diyconvention.com by March 31.
The CLUB DIY discussion on April 1 will feature two one-on-one conversations. First will be “Cracking the Film & TV Market,” featuring Dave Freeman, the owner/agent of Falling Elevator Music Group, which specializes in independent music placement. Freeman will discuss the current state of the business and the steps you need to take to place songs or acquire music for your project.
The second discussion will feature independent consultant Jeffry Martini, who will discuss “How To Create Your Own Syndicated Radio Show.” Martini, who was instrumental in the sales growth of the LA Weekly and several radio stations, will detail a simple method for reaching audiences on the nation’s top radio stations, a method that’s already been parlayed by some of radio’s biggest names to achieve career success.
The discussions will commence at 8 p.m. on that evening, preceded by a networking cocktail party at 7 p.m.
Music for the evening will be performed starting at 8 p.m. by 2004 DIY Songwriter of the Year Robynn Ragland; Digital CutUp Lounge, featuring John von Seggern and Andrew Pask mixig the latest downtempo, dub and electronica with live jazz; the exotic and intoxicating world music sounds of Rebecca Trujillo and Munda; the punk sensibilities of Sassafrass; and the solo stylings of Jeff Geoffray.
The night will also feature a screening of the 2004 DIY Film Festival best documentary, “You Think You Really Know Me,” at 9 p.m. The film is a study of the outside the box career of lost DIY music legend Gary Wilson, who will attend the screening and answer questions.
