CHINESE SLAMDANCE

By Film Threat Staff | November 5, 2002

Slamdance On The Road packs up a selection of award winning films and heads to China for screenings at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, November 5 – 7.
“The On The Road events began with an invitation from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum to show several Slamdance films for people who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to see these low-budget works. Because this first outing proved so popular with audiences and participating filmmakers alike, we decided to take our traveling roadshow further afield, in this case much further. On The Road in China is significant for us because not only does a new audience want to see Slamdance films, they also want to study them in the context of American filmmaking,” said Slamdance President Peter Baxter.
Chinese viewers, mostly made up of students, will be offered screenings of “The Bible and Gun Club,” directed by 1998 Grand Jury prize winner Daniel Harris, “Surrender Dorothy,” directed by 1999 Grand Jury prize winner Kevin Di Novis, Dolphins, directed by 2000 Audience Award winner Farhad Yawari and Daydream Believer, directed by 2001 Jury prize and Independent Spirit award winner Debra Eisenstadt. In addition to the screenings, Peter Baxter will present a lecture on November 8th about low-budget filmmaking in the United States.
