Featuring more than 100 new films from around the globe, the 39th Chicago International Film Festival will run October 2 – 16, 2003.
The opening night screening. “The Human Stain,” on Thursday, October 2 will be at the Chicago Theatre, 175 North State Street. Directed by Robert Benton, the film stars Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Ed Harris and Steppenwolf ensemble member Gary Sinise.
Hopkins stars as Coleman Silk, a distinguished professor at a prestigious New England college whose professional life is suddenly shattered by allegations of racism. As Silk hides in shame, his career and reputation in ruins, a writer, Nathan Zuckerman (Sinise), becomes intrigued with his story. Zuckerman stumbles upon several unexpected revelations, including a scandalous affair with a troubled young woman, Faunia (Kidman). Through these two new relation-ships, Silk begins a dynamic resurrection. But a devastating secret remains, a 50-year-old lie he is determined to harbor, regardless of the consequences. Harris rounds out an all-star cast of Academy Award-winners and nominees in this story adapted by Nicholas Meyer from the Phillip Roth novel.
