Garth Franklin over at Dark Horizons reports that Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that all promotional film screenings for the public are canceled due to the amount of pirated films that stem from these screenings. Franklin reports, “According to Warners, more than 70% of all pirated Warners titles released over the past 18 months originated in Canada.” Apparently in Canada there is no real law to prevent camcorders from entering theaters, therefore the Warners will not allow public screenings until the government takes action. Canadian members of press will not be affected as press screenings for “credentialed media” will still take place. Does that mean we will see more and more basement film websites popping up in Canada? Only time will tell.
