BLACK XXX-MAS

By Charles Martin | December 24, 2004

A wildly-visual director serves up cyberpunk tastelessness, with a disturbing side of stereotyping to boot. Surrealism never felt so uninspired.
This feels more like a demo reel than a coherent film. Santa’s daughter sneaks out of her house to go party, but gets eaten by a policeman. Meanwhile, Samuel L. Santa is whuppin the s**t out of some kid who caught him delivering presents. At his next stop he seduces the policeman’s wife, kills the cop and recovers his daughter (oh, did I mention there are lots of gross bits?). Visually this is a nice cross between Blade Runner and Alien with a fair amount of Terry Gilliam and Tarantino thrown in. Story-wise, though, this thing’s a mess. Director Pieter Van Hees would be well-served by developing his own style instead of just Frankenstien-fusing bits of other people’s work.
