“Almost Forgot My Bones” is a poem set to film. That’s the best way to explain this short movie. Unfortunately, like most poems, it failed to move me.
Tanya Evanson is a poet (and she also wrote the poem this movie is set to) who is in a new city and is trying to find something that reminds her of her old home. Or at least that’s what I took from it. Your interpretation may be different. Either way, the film is well done on a technical level, and I think those who enjoy poetry will get a real thrill from seeing a poem presented this way. For the rest of us, though, this simply doesn’t work. We’ve all been in similar situations, but this still felt alien. Maybe it’s the poem and poet. Maybe it’s just me. I do respect what they’ve done here, however, and I hope more people take chances like this and push the boundaries of what film is supposed to be.
