A loose remake of the Hitchcock film “Dial M for Murder,” this 90s version is helmed by action director Andrew Davis (“Fugitive”, “Chain Reaction”). This film once again proves that Hollywood has apparently run out of original ideas and is forced to remake another classic film and, like most Hollywood remakes…big surprise…it SUCKS.
The cast is actually quite impressive, Michæl Douglas (playing a rich guy for a change. Oh, wait, he does that in every film) Gwyneth Paltrow and Viggo Mortenson among others, but the film is so lacking in anything original that it is hardly worth recommending.
For those who have never had the pleasure of watching the original “Dail M”, the story involves a millionaire who hires a man to murder his wife. On the surface the story is pretty simple, but once Hitchcock’s visual style is added, you get to look at the film through the eyes of a genius. Well … Andrew Davis is no genius and neither is this film. It captures little of the emotion contained in the original and none of its style.
