This won the Kodak Cinematography Award in the Shorts category at this year’s Florida Film Festival in Orlando, and it’s easy to see why. A skillful reworking of Vladamir Nabakov’s tale of a lonely man who’s only love life is in fantasy until the Devil makes him a deal, the brilliant colours and warm vibes somehow harmonize with the gritty, urban feeling of the Korean location shooting and give the film an earthy realism to contrast the simple and elegant fantasy elements.
Despite essentially being a morality play, A Nursery Tale is surprisingly hip and fun, and has some nice set pieces, though there’s a bit too much running around. Korea never seemed so cool.
