The 22nd Atlantic Film Festival, Sept. 13-21, announced today its official lineup of films, industry programs and special events. This year’s program includes 215 Atlantic, Canadian and international films and videos with the most Atlantic features and French films the Festival has seen in recent years.
Opening the Festival is locally co-produced “Bowling for Columbine” by controversial filmmaker Michael Moore (“Roger and Me”, “Canadian Bacon”, “The Awful Truth”). “Bowling for Columbine” uses the shootings at Columbine High School as the primary basis and then branches out into wider reflections on what guns mean to America and the world. “Bowling for Columbine” is the winner of the 55th Anniversary prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was the first documentary to be in competition in 46 years.
Closing the Festival is “Julie Walking Home” by Agnieska Holland (“Olivier Olivier”, “The Secret Garden”, “Europa Europa”). Shot on location in Nova Scotia and Poland, “Julie Walking Home” is a powerful story of conflict between the powers of faith and science. Julie’s (Miranda Otto) son is dying of cancer and her marriage falling apart. She searches for a spiritual healer in Alexis played by Lothaire Bluteau (“Jesus of Montreal”, “Black Robe”) and finds not only a magical cure for her son but a love that heals her aching heart.
