Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent/Superman is back, but he’s not featured in the film nearly as much as I wanted. He does an outstanding job when he’s on screen, but the film would have benefited from having more of him. Amy Adams does magnificent work as Lois Lane, still grieving Clark’s death, but concluding that she must move on and continue her life. Her scenes with Diane Lane’s Martha Kent are well-acted and pack an emotive gut punch. Lastly, Ray Porter’s Darkseid and Peter Guinness’ DeSaad are purely teasers and sequel setups, but they work. I’d love to see their roles expanded upon at some point soon.
As vast of an improvement as Zack Snyder’s Justice League is, it’s still a Zack Snyder movie. You either love or hate his work. I’m not a super fan of his by any means, but he doesn’t irk me like he does other people. I think he’s a competent filmmaker who makes undeniably cool and well-executed action sequences. Still, many times, his characters and directing can teeter between terrible to offensively dull. This is Zack Snyder’s best film. Hands down. It’s full of all his quirks and signatures like overindulgent slow-mo and questionable song choices, but it’s done in a constantly entertaining way. If you’re a Snyder hater, there’s probably a lot you’ll hate here. Still, if you like him or at the very least respect aspects of his work, you’ll be beyond pleased with his definitive vision of Justice League.
“…a new experience, and you should come into it open-minded…”
This was a weird review to write. I basically have to compare Synder’s version to what came before, which was so vastly inferior that it’s hard to put into words. Just pretend the Justice League abomination doesn’t exist. As a matter of fact, refer to it as the long-forgotten and non-canon mistake. This is the Justice League. This is the one we should have received in theaters back in 2017 in the first place. This is a new experience, and you should come into it open-minded and informed by no previous opinions or notions.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a landmark in comic book films. I hope this starts a major trend in Hollywood and the mainstream studio systems: let the artists do their thing. Don’t be swayed by bad reviews or “fan” backlash, stay the course, and see things through, because if you don’t, you get “thirsty” jokes, paper-thin and poorly done CG villains, and a garbage-looking Superman with a weird upper lip. Please, I am begging anyone out there reading this, let’s band together and unite to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse.
Now, where’s my Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad at Warner Bros? #ReleaseTheAyerCut next.
