The third movie, Don’t Legalize It, blew the doors off the Better Buy Barn by actually being decent. Sure, it still felt like either a long episode or a short season of the show, but it came so much closer to generating the magic grease that makes the TV series sparkle. So, I was not here with a joint hanging out of my mouth waiting to rubber-stamp the new Trailer Park Boys movie. Instead, I was using a water pipe covered in stickers of Bubbles’ face to brace myself for another possible s**t wave of pain. I ended up feeling no pain at all, as there was none to be had.
We finally have a movie set in the Trailer Park Boys universe that is so good it rises above being a companion piece to the show and is a great motion picture in its own right. While Trailer Park Boys: Standing On The Shoulders Of Kitties is being billed as a Bubbles solo spin-off, it has more of the rest of the Trailer Park Boys here than there was Beetlejuice in the movies with his name on them. Maybe it will be like the solo Kiss albums, with Ricky, Julian, and Randy each getting a solo movie next.
Seeing Smith play Country Western will make you cream your Wranglers until they stand up by themselves. His ability to stay in character while rocking the s**t out of his tunes is staggering. You also get to see Billy Bob blast it live on stage, which is a treat. I saw Thornton play his music at Willie Nelson’s picnic in Texas 21 years ago when his song “Smoking In Bed” became my personal anthem. Later at the picnic, while seeing Neil Young with Crazy Horse rocking out with Willie Nelson, I marveled that they had not lost a thing and were playing better than ever in their advanced years.
“Smith’s pacing is stupendous, as the story keeps pumping at a riot hose velocity.”
That is where the Trailer Park Boys are right now, rocking harder than they ever have. Their comedic timing now borders on evil genius, with Smith, Wells, Trembley, and Roach repeatedly hitting the high parts of your lungs. Smith is a highly skilled screenwriter, immediately starting her off at full throttle with laughs that make your chest cave in. I am saying you will be laughing so hard the joint will go out.
There are some devastatingly funny sequences that will knock the snot out of your skull. But it is all running through this touching story that keeps dipping heavy at just the right time. Smith’s pacing is stupendous, as the story keeps pumping at a riot hose velocity. The fantastic songs, all of which fans can sing along to, are judicially used and never overstay an appearance for the newbies watching. Also, director Lightening makes everything look like a million bucks, which is easily the snazziest-looking Trailer Park Boys movie ever. It also has some precious-looking pusser-cats on display, definitely widescreen kitties.
There is a heart-wrenching tribute to a fan-favorite cat in the series, the great Vince the Pince, that is a great testament to the show’s unique focus on kitties. Yes, Billy Bob, there does need to be more songs written about kitties. Trailer Park Boys: Standing On The Shoulders Of Kitties has finally cracked the code for translating the Trailer Park Boys to the big screen, and the results are f*****g phenomenal.
