Short films need stakes, and the higher the stakes, the better. There are no greater stakes than the choice between Heaven and Hell, as illustrated in Jason Sheedy’s comedic short, To Hell With You.

In the aftermath of a botched exorcism, young Brennan is caught in a battle between Heaven and Hell. It appears the demon Doyle has rights to Brennan’s soul because he was possessed at the time of his death, but the angel Esme knows that Brennan is a good soul. The loophole in heavenly law states that because Brennan was possessed, Doyle is entitled to his soul… plus, Doyle has a quota to fill.

Amid the bickering, Brennan’s ghost rises from his corpse, unsure of where he wants to go.

“Amid the bickering, Brennan’s ghost rises from his corpse, unsure of where he wants to go.”

To Hell With You is a sweet horror comedy that makes even a demon sympathetic. The three leads, Erin Ownbey, Andrew Bourne, and Brett Brooks, deliver wonderful performances, avoiding any over-the-top absurdity.

The most impressive part of the short is how filmmaker Sheedy sets the tale in the 70s, creating a film that genuinely feels from that era—albeit with a touch of 70s porno aesthetics. The costume design for Demon Doyle and Angel Esme is spot-on.

To Hell With You captures a humorous balance of humor, horror, and heartfelt moments, thanks to its charming performances and Jason Sheedy’s clever storytelling. With its 70s retro aesthetic and high-stakes celestial debate, it’s a short film that reminds us why the battle for a soul can be just as entertaining as it is profound.
