For us sick puppies who like our satire as black as midnight, we have the clever queer comedy horror film The Rebrand, the feature debut of director Kaye Adelaide. Written by Adelaide and star Nancy Webb, this found footage horror movie opens on an open laptop that has the Crime Queens website up, full of episodes of queer true crime. A story is clicked upon about the catastrophe surrounding disgraced online Lesbian influencer couple Thistle (Nancy Webb) and Blair (Andi E McQueen). Hosted by Tranna Wintour (Tranna Wintour), the episode follows the famous couple’s downfall due to a streamed hot mic rant against the trans community and their disastrous attempt at a comeback. The video contains the footage that was taken by Nicole (Naomi Silver-Vezina), a videographer that Thistle and Blair hired to film their attempt at a rebrand.
“…the catastrophe surrounding a disgraced online Lesbian influencer couple…”
Bisexual Nicole is eight months pregnant and is in desperate need of money to change her living situation. When she arrives at the couple’s isolated house in the woods, the first thing she sees is Thistle go outside by herself and smash in the head of something wrapped in a towel. Thistle is all smiles when they meet, as is Blair, which makes Thistle jealous. They have Nicole film Blair proposing to Thistle for the comeback video, with a big wedding to come. It is all just a publicity boost, as they both secretly got married years prior. There is also an announcement that Thistle is expecting a baby in 8 months, which can lead to years of viral queer parenting videos. At the end of the day, over a hot cup of special herbal tea, the couple asks Nicole to stay the night. When she refuses, they keep offering her more money until she accepts. Later that night, Nicole wakes up to something horrible…
"…excels in its brilliance as a deep, dark, and delicious satire of influencer culture."
