The Imposters

Happily, both for me and The Imposters, the second twist clears certain elements up while making the first twist less cliched than it comes across. Then, the third twist plays out just before the end, and it is flawless. The characters, all of them imposters in one way or another, are found out for who they truly are. Can they live with themselves once all is revealed?

Everett delivers a stellar performance as the lead with a dark past who uncovers secrets about a relative stranger. Her portrayal, at times robotic and unreactive, is a testament to her acting prowess. As layers are pulled down, she becomes more raw and emotional, a transformation that is both impressive and captivating. Walker, on the other hand, is a revelation, bringing a sexy, enticing, and demented energy to her character — a truly glorious combination in a noirish thriller such as this.

Nicholas Winter’s direction is a masterclass in creating a noirish thriller atmosphere. His strong eye for the surroundings engulfs the leads, making the audience feel a part of the story. The beach, as vast as the secrets they both keep, and the nights spent walking around and flirting, as dark as their souls, are vividly brought to life. All the major twists are revealed in broad daylight along a mountain’s hiking trail, a choice that, while not the most subtle, works, especially given how the rest of the film is shot, drawing the audience deeper into the mystery.

The Imposters is a thriller that toys with the truth in fun ways. Everett and Walker are terrific, enigmatic, and sexy as the leads. The first twist does not land properly, but the subsequent narrative swerves are very fulfilling and interesting.
