In Chris Harboldt’s comedy short, The Boy Toy, an aging, former boy band singer, Phoenix Green (Rob Jaeger), has been living the good life for the past decade or so, thanks to the wealthy Whitney (Debbie Scaletta). Though his senior, Phoenix is having difficulty keeping up with Whitney in the bedroom.

If Phoenix wants to continue living on Whitney’s gravy train, he’ll have to make some drastic changes with the help of top plastic surgeon Dr. Tigas (Ern Gerardo). However, Phoenix is not sure he can go through with it.

The Boy Toy is a humorous tale of the rich and famous growing older. Rather than reinventing outward appearances, the best option may be reinventing your destiny.

“…an aging, former boy band singer, Phoenix Green… has been living the good life for the past decade…”

As a film, writer Harboldt’s tale is a straightforward narrative. The Boy Toy offers laughs along the way, but it is clearly an ultra-low-budget production. Rob Jaeger keeps it light as Phoenix Green and puts his body and appearance on the line for the sake of comedy.

The Boy Toy highlights the absurd lengths people will go to in order to maintain their status quo. While the film’s budget constraints are evident, its charm and humor keep things light and entertaining. Ultimately, this short reminds us that a shift in perspective may be a great way to jumpstart one’s future.
