It has been understood by America the culture of Hollywood embodies the ‘ethos’ of “live fast, die young, leave a beautiful corpse”. I’m here to tell you the new short film Pool Party lives up to that standard superbly. A fever dream of Brandon Bernath, Pool Party is his first directed work that is not a music video.
When you write your first story, lens your first movie, you should prepare a piece from what you’ve got some experience with. In Mr. Bernath’s case, this is music. To that end, Beverly Holloway (Rachelle Carson-Begley) has had for the past 3 years an off/on relationship with the fiery Danny Dynamite (Daigo Yamashita). Danny is one of the up-and-coming Japanese rockabilly singers, and he has been waiting ever so long for Beverly to profess her love for him. Clearly, this reticence to state her love for Danny is the tension that causes this relationship to break down every so often.
“The pool party that Beverly arranges after breaking up with Danny for what she considers the final time.”
Pool Party is literally that. The pool party that Beverly arranges after breaking up with Danny for what she considers the final time. All her friends are invited, her Butler (Circus-Szalewski) is tasked with running the party and seeing to every one’s needs. Special mention is granted to Circus-Szalewski who’s Butler is an unflappable professional, no matter the sleazy behavior manifesting around him.
Pool Party is a deliciously tacky romantic comedy. This widow and her rockabilly paramour are just dynamite together. Seek it out in April when it’s available. It’s a rocking and rooting fun time
